Disney announced that its blockbuster film “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will make $2.2 billion this weekend at the domestic box office, the company’s first ever box office record.
The new record comes on top of a reported $1 billion in domestic ticket sales, according to estimates from The Motion Picture Association of America.
The box office has been a boon for Disney, which has been the beneficiary of an unprecedented boost in box office revenues from the success of the new films “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Jungle Book.”
The “Star War” spinoff is the latest franchise to make history, having grossed more than $2 billion worldwide.
Disney is also set to launch a new live-action film, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” this fall, which could surpass the $2-billion mark.
